I would appreciate some advice from WHO's runners
Hello. I'm thinking of buying my son a half-decent pair of running shoes for Christmas. I have no idea where to start. He runs on pavements and grass (up and down hills). Is it worth getting him to go for Gait Analysis first, or is that a load of nonsense? Thank you.

Peckham. I have already tried to steer him in the direction of REME or Engineers or something. He is fully aware of the options, post-army opportunities, etc, and thinking through them.

Definitely worth getting the gait analysis from a proper running shop.
I've been buying Asics shoes for years by mail order but just before Xmas last year I decided, in an effort to alleviate seemingly endless injuries, to have gait analysis. I also found out Asics had changed their sizings, so my size. 11 feet now need 11 1/2.
The prices weren't that much more than I'd been paying mail order so it was a worthwhile trip all round.

Wifes nephew came out of the marines after service in Afghanistan where he didn't see any combat as was a cook in the kitchens. Worked in security (as did an ex para I know protecting oil rigs) when he left in Iraq then Somali pirates patrol. Went to live bought a flat in Thailand split up with Thai girl after 6 years as he wouldnt marry her and she married a yank soon after, which caused him to drink heavily and started FX and professional gambling.

Hoka One One Carbon X about €150, but well spent and will last. Hoka do a pair for about €100 but I think the Carbon X are the best on the market. IMHO.

Re: I would appreciate some advice from WHO's runners
Nurse,
Just to chip in on the rare occasion regarding your boy. I recommend the Army all day long , only if 1. He is fit 2. Its a wish or desire. Anything but the infantry. Royal Engineers get a trade for life. For example must think post Army. Even if the plan is to go up the ranks and do 22 years. Farriers earn excellent in civvy st, huge demand if he likes horses such as the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.
Anywhere he joins will get a an HGV 1 should driving be a passion. Back in the day everyone who joined and left the Royal Signals were always sorted for jobs in comms.
Can´t stress enough not the Infantry of today, and thats coming from a once proud Rifleman ( Infantry ).
If he likes responsibility the Military Police, fitness nut then there is the The Royal Army Physical Training Corps.

Forget the screaming and shouting palluva it is not Full Metal Jacket. Only the idiots or slackers or knobs get screamed down. Keep your head down, work hard , respect training NCOs and the initial hard 11 weeks is a breeze.

Food - 3-4 good cooked meals a day, cooked for you, sweet.

It seems as he is running, he cares about fitness, the Army is a daily for free gym that could give him a career he loves without doubt experiencing many parts of the world. Could do 14 years and start paying a mortgage when he has joined and settled in Battalion meaning he is sound on the property ladder when he leaves. Or do the minimum 3 years, travel, get skills and a trade and it still wouldn't be a waste.

I was on a regimental recruiting team at the Strand for 6 months. Didn't recruit one person despite a bounty of 200 quid, because I was too honest and could only recruit or get money for them to join the Infantry but some were too clever so didnt want to swindle them, others too stupid that I knew they were joining for the wrong reasons.

Apart from a few good Officers working great senior jobs in big companies, and a black cab driver, 90% of my lot are working in security at different levels, the great private security bubble has burst. It is mundane or dangerous and not a great after career from the Army life.
Others joined at 16 are now 40 odd commissioned officers, Infantry , paid off their mortgages got kids and have a cushty life for grafting those years through the ranks.

If push come to shove I can only recommend the Infantry if he is up for 22 years. Prepared to see mates die in wars fuck all to do with the UK. Thanks BLAIR.

Otherwise a trade. REME is a good good call by 67.

There was a sketch on TV about leaving the army and going on to civvy st. Two doors , one marked taxi drivers and the other one security guards.

When I was 16 me and my MATE looked into Junior Army... Mum was not gonna sign me in... I told her was looking at a SAFE regiment ... the Royal Engineers... I mean I would have only been difusing UXB's in Londonderry... anyway my MATE joined as he wanted a trade so Engineers for him... when he left 6 years later he became a bouncer... good trade

He had a REME bloke 'chatting him up' at the assessment day.

It's one of the options he is considering, but I think he wants more 'action'.

I was a pompadour mate.. Battalion was dispanded in 92..most went into 1R Anglian(vikings).. Some odd bods went to poachers.
I believe the lineage is now C Coy 1R Anglian
Great family Regt.. And well respected in house.. Wouldnt hesitate to recommend to any young lad.

As for walter.. Hes a classic a Walt..
Most walts have 'served' with the Regt.. And either of Bootnecks or Para Regt.. Some show some imagination and were a guardsman...
Never a chunky . Spanner monkeys or corpse corps..

The uber walts tend to go to extreme lengths.. Buy all the NO 2s... cap badges.. Ties.. Even fookin MEDALS.... Easy these days I guess.
A lot of em have been mangled on remembrance days in the boozers after.. That's a site to behold I tell ya
You've wisely deduced he's a Walt.. Therefore you have his number(no pun)..
Humour him.. Your sister is a bird mate.. She'll figure it out.. Eventually.. Hope you humiliate him in good order..
